Introduktion

Amerikansk digter og kritiker. Som ung og efter endt universitetsuddannelse rejste Pound til Europa, hvor han tog varigt ophold (fra 1908 i London og fra 1920 i Paris). Blev som frontfigur for den litterære kreds, Imagisterne, der ligeledes omfattede T. E. Hulme, førende inden for den modernistiske lyrik. Redigerede i denne forbindelse det litterære programskift, Des Imagistes (1914). Pound opbyggede utallige kontakter med ledende litterære skikkelser, som han både understøttede og påvirkede, herunder James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, Hemingway, Robert Frost og W. B. Yeats, for hvem han også arbejdede som sekretær. Sammen med vennen T.S. Eliot eksperimenterede Pound med mange former for lyrik, bl.a. japansk og kinesisk (Cathay, 1915) og antik digtning (Quia Pauper Amavi (1918), bl.a. indeholdende ’Homage to Sextus Propertius’) samt middelalderfransk. Blandt hans mest vellykkede er Hugh Selwyn Mauberly (1920), indeholdende et skarpt angreb på den moderne civilisation. Grundet sin beundring for Italien, flyttede han 1924 til den italienske by Rapallo, hvor han, mere isoleret fra sin tidligere omgangskreds, fortsatte sit skønlitterære forfatterskab med en lang række af Cantos (dansk i udvalg Digte og Cantos, 1968) hvormed han ville skabe et moderne sidestykke til Dantes Divina Commedia. Med allusioner til store dele af verdenslitteraturen og fortidige og samtidige politiske begivenheder, skulle disse Cantos beskrive menneskets fortidige og nutidige søgen efter orden og skønhed i en verden af ondskab. Ved siden af dette arbejde dyrkede Pound en interesse for økonomi og politik inspireret af C. H. Douglas’ kollektivistiske teorier om ’social credit’ og kongfuzianistiske samfundsidealer. Gennem 20’- og 30’erne stod Pound i forbindelse med en lang række politiske personligheder indenfor hele det politiske spekter. Kombinationen af et aristokratisk syn på kunst og kultur og en stærk aversion mod kapitalisme og renteøkonomi, som han mente undergravede menneskets kulturskabende evne, gjorde Pound til en stadig mere ukritisk beundrer af Mussolinis politiske programmer, som han dog ikke anså for normgivende udenfor Italien. Fra 1941 til 1943 optrådte han dog ligefrem i Roms radio, og i sine noget usammenhængende radiotaler fra denne tid, vendte han sig både imod de allierede, USA's deltagelse i krigen, Roosevelt og ”den bolsjevistiske amoral”, men kom derudover med flere nedladende bemærkninger om ”jødiske kapitalister”, hvilket Pound senere fortrød (”I lost my head in a storm”). Pound arresteredes 1945 af den amerikanske hær og blev anklaget for landsforræderi. Efter seks måneder i fangelejr førtes han til Amerika. Takket være bl.a. Hemmingway undgik han dødsdom og interneredes i stedet som sindssyg 1946-58. Vendte efter sin løsladelse 1958 tilbage til Italien, hvor han døde i 1972. Udsendte i 1948 de anerkendte Pisan Cantos og trods sin temmelig uheldige optræden under Anden Verdenskrig tildeltes han i 1949 den ærefulde Bollingen-pris. Hans Cantos færdiggjordes med Drafts and Fragments of Cantos CX to CXVII (1968) og The Cantos of Ezra Pound I-CXVII (1970).
