Introduktion
 Irsk
digter. Kom fra en protestantisk kunstnerfamilie. Flyttede 1887 til London.
Ungdomsdigtningen påvirket af præraphaëlitterne og symbolismen. Yeats
udviklede sig både indenfor sin lyriske og den dramatiske digtning til en
visionær, men ofte vanskeligt tilgængelig digter, ikke mindst ved sin brug af
irsk folklore og sagnhistorie: The Secret Rose (1897), The Wanderings
of Oisin (1889), The Wind Among the Reeds (1899, da. Blæsten
mellem sivene, 1899). Yeats udviklede desuden tidligt en interesse for
mystik (redigerede bl.a. William Blakes værker) og det okkulte (fremstillet i A
Vision (1925, rev. 1937)). Som nationalist stiftede han 1891-92 The Irish
Litterary Society i London og i Dublin. Var medstifter af det irske
nationalteater - Abbey Theatre i Dublin, som han kom til at lede og hvortil han
skrev en række skuespil med irske motiver, bl.a. Cathleen Ni Houlihan
(1902), On Baile’s Strand (1902), Deirdre (1907) og senere At
Hawks’ Well (1926) og The Death of Cuchulain (1939). Hans indsats
bidrog til den irske dramatiks opblomstring. Lod sig omkring 1910 inspirere af
vennen Ezra Pound til at eksperimentere med det japanske masketeater. Under Første
Verdenskrig ligeledes under indflydelse af T. S. Eliot og modernismen (Two
Plays for Dancers (1924)) og udviklede en virkelighedsnær aktuel poesi: The
Wild Swans at Coole (1917), Michael
Robartes and the Dancer (1921, omhandlende bl.a. Påskeopstanden 1916), The
Lake Isle of Innisfree (1924). Hans visionære symbolik nåede et højdepunkt
med digtsamlingen The Tower (1928, bl.a. med det berømte digt ’Sailing
to Byzantium’). Havde i samarbejde med Maud Gonne deltaget i den
national-revolutionære bevægelse. Efter skuffelse over den politiske udvikling
i Irland omkring 1913-14, genoptog han med frisk mod det nationale arbejde efter
Påskeopstanden 1916 og var en årrække (1922-28) senator i den nye irske
fristat. Hans erindringer kom på dansk 1942 (Drømmerier over barneår og
